Her theory is that copper may be causing fatigue in some people, however, this is rare as most of us are able to excrete any excess copper. Thus, you should get a hair analysis test done to find out (you can buy these online for about ). If you do indeed have excess copper you can follow the supplement and dietary guidelines she provides. Her advise is holistic, so recovery will most likely take longer. There are a couple of prescription meds available to help rid of excess copper which she does not discuss at all.

She also discusses the very important role of zinc (which will also be tested if you order a hair analysis). Although I did not test high for copper, I do have very low zinc and thanks to this book I can work on that which should help in my overall health.

If you have copper overload or low zinc there is a “Nutritional Data” website that will tell you exactly how much of each is in different foods.

I purchased this book for a multitude of reasons and have found the content useful and the recipes easy to follow and implement into my daily menu planning. This book is not an extreme approach to healthful eating which I appreciated. It is not suggesting you become a vegan to maintain a healthy lifestyle, just making slight augmentations to the diet can have a huge impact on how you feel and how your body responds to illness. I’m using this book in hopes that my daughter will have decreased issues with eczema and symptoms of asthma. As a family we are making these changes and I hope to prevent myself from developing heart disease which runs in my family. I think this is a great read and would highly recommend it. I only wish she had suggestions for further readings or recommendations for other cookbooks that she finds useful.

I read this books years ago, and when I found out the book was revised I had to have it. This book teaches you how to make a healthy eatting change for life, or just to lose those unwanted pounds. I bought this book as a way to re-teach myself how to eat properly. A go back to basics if you will. On the same day I bought French Women Don’t Get Fat as well. I’m not a fat person at all, I’m a dancer and I also suffer from hypoglycemia. I tried doing the French book and it didn’t go over well at all. I’d gotten to the part where you’re supposed to fast for a weekend drinking nothing but some leek broth and my body said no way. I gave up on that book and picked up this one instead. At first I thought it was going to be exactly like the other, but this one turned out to be better. For one thing there was no fasting involved. At first this kind of puzzled me since most diets require you to fast at the beginning. Then it dawned on me that eating more veggies would do the job for you, just a little slower and gentler. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to try any of the recipies as I now live on a tight budget and in a small town where mexican food is considered foreign so I have to drive quite a way to find the ingredients I need. Using a little common sense and ingenuity however I applied these principles to Western food (I am a fully blown European decended American) along with what my own mother taught me (stay away from processed foods as much as possible, eat your veggies, etc.) and found that I was able to find a healthy weight, lots more energy, and I was able to control my hypoglycemia much better. If anything its been several months since I’ve had a “low” and I couldn’t be more pleased.
Another thing is that people think that this is a loose weight diet book. It’s not. It’s a way to encourage you to eat healthier and if you happen to loose a couple of pounds along the way then great. Diet doesn’t always mean loosing weight. A diet can also be a way to increase energy or prevent you from getting sick.
That being said I can now put my soapbox away on dieting and wrap this up. This book is a nice read and encouraging in that it doesn’t browbeat you about being fat and make you feel guilty. If you’re looking for a way to re-learn how to eat properly and healty then this is definately the book for you. If you’re looking for a fad diet where you’ll loose 50 lbs in two weeks then forget it.

I just finished this book. It was a light and interesting read. I gave it five stars because I believe that despite how the material was delivered — it is an extremely important subject that is, overall, quite esoteric. Thus, for his field one can’t criticize too harshly.

The book itself I felt like it could, as other reviewers have said, had a little more emphasis on an actual plan. Instead of giving a plan he demonstrated it with *ideas* for meals. I really wanted some more specific nutritional content instead of an overall “index.” But hey, maybe I’m just a little bit of a science geek at heart. (Give me real numbers, not made up units!) Though, clearly, this book was intended for the common man — for the nation — not for a scientist at heart.

One thing that surprised me is how little supplementation of omega 3 EPA he recommended. Perhaps this was because he expected us to be getting it from the better meals we would be eating? Some studies on depression/bipolar, among other things recommend supplementing as much as 2 GRAMS of EPA per day, many of which have impressive outcomes! (Can this amount be achieved simply by eating “right?” Perhaps this high ammount is therapeautic)

But the important things that were introduced to me in this book that despite all of my reading of scientific studies, and prowling around on the net for information on inflammatory disease, I had never run across comes from the insightful review of the effects of arachidonic acid — an insidious omega 6 fatty acid in our diet responsible for much of our immune problems as a nation, and the effects of an important supplement I’d entirely neglected to ever look into: borage oil.

Over all, this book had great information in it that even an otherwise well-informed guy like me could use! For all of it’s shortcomings it offers something that’s great, and I think, could stop a LOT of misery in this world! If I have any criticism, it is that it felt geared a little too much towards the average joe! But this isn’t a bad thing… it just serves a bigger purpose and that is helping the common man, instead of being simply of academic appeal.
